Paddle Orin Meditation Bell - Silver
The Paddle is an orin — a Japanese meditation bell — made in Takaoka, Japan, by one workshop since 1938. A glass stand sits on top of the forged brass bell, and a paddle-shaped mallet with a cherry-wood ball at each end rests in the small hollow at the center of the glass.
Lift the mallet and tap the brass bell gently for a clear tone, then rest the mallet back on the glass; the bell keeps ringing. Glass, brass, and cherry wood give it a light, clear presence in a modern room.
Ring it at the start and end of your meditation or yoga practice, or use it to open your morning and close your evening routine. Available in Gold, Silver, and Black.
The Paddle received Japan's Good Design Award in 2018.

Who is the Paddle for?
People who like contemporary design and want a bell that stands on its own as an object in the room, as well as a tool for their practice.
When do people ring it?
Most often at the start and end of a meditation or yoga session. You can also ring it to open your morning or to close an evening routine before bed.
Does placing the mallet on the glass stop the sound?
No. The mallet rests in the hollow of the glass stand, and the brass bell keeps ringing.
What does it sound like?
A clear tone with a quick, natural wavering. In our measurements, its main tone is about 1,990 Hz and it rings for about 8 seconds.
Do I need to be Buddhist to use an orin?
No. In Japan, orin are traditionally rung at Buddhist home altars, but you don't need any religious practice to use one. You can ring the Paddle simply to mark the start and end of your practice.
Does ringing a bell clear the energy in a room?
Many traditions have described the sound of a bell as clearing or purifying a space. We don't claim any measurable effect of that kind. What the Paddle produces is sound: a clear tone that fades slowly.
Why use the included pad?
Setting the bell on the pad lets it ring longer, because less of the vibration is absorbed by the surface underneath.
How do I care for it?
Dust the brass lightly with a soft cloth, and wipe the glass with a soft, dry cloth. The stand is glass, so handle it with care and avoid knocks. Don't use solvent-based cleaners; they can damage the finish.
Is the Paddle a good gift?
It can be a thoughtful gift for someone who meditates or practices yoga and appreciates design.
